Derek Chisora is set to commemorate his 50th professional boxing match by the end of the year. The 41-year-old heavyweight announced via Instagram that this landmark fight will happen in Manchester on December 13th. Chisora declared:
“Let me tell you something. Are you ready? We are going back to Manchester, 13th of December – road to 50. Book your hotels, book your restaurants, me and Queensberry are coming to shut it down in Manchester 13th of December. Opponent will be announced soon. I had one but the big boss took him. Can’t really argue when the big boss says what he wants. Road to 50 in Manchester, shutdown, Last Dance 2 happening in Manchester. War!”
The «big boss» likely refers to Turki Alalshikh, a highly influential figure in boxing.
Earlier this year, in February, Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs) secured a 12-round points victory against Otto Wallin at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena. This Queensberry-promoted event was paradoxically dubbed «The Last Dance,» despite being his 49th professional contest.
Despite being the IBF`s mandatory challenger, Chisora faces a long wait for a shot at undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk. The British veteran has already fought Usyk once, losing on points in a hard-fought bout in October 2020.
In August, Jai Opetaia`s manager, Mick Francis, indicated that Turki Alalshikh was interested in arranging a fight between Chisora and Opetaia, the IBF world cruiserweight champion. Francis informed Fox Sports Australia that if Opetaia moved up a weight class, the IBF would rank him third. He also confirmed interest from both Alalshikh and Queensberry in this «massive» potential matchup, though he expressed concern for Chisora`s safety, stating, “He’d be no match for Opetaia. I know Jai would hurt him.”
Two months prior, promoter Frank Warren had expressed openness to a third bout with Joseph Parker, despite Parker winning their previous two encounters. Warren noted that while he`d try to make the fight, the decision ultimately rests with Derek, especially as the IBF mandatory challenger. He described a Chisora-Parker matchup as a «bloody good fight.» However, Parker is currently unavailable, as he is slated to face Fabio Wardley for the WBA interim belt on October 25th at London’s O2 Arena.
Uncertainty remains whether Chisora will headline the December 13th event in Manchester, or if the spotlight will instead fall on rising heavyweight Moses Itauma, also scheduled to fight before the year`s end.
