Amidst the grand spectacle of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight week, a promising fighter from Liverpool, Mikie Tallon, made a remarkable Las Vegas debut, which could have easily gone unnoticed.

“There’s a significant difference in my skill level, particularly due to the expertise Joe has imparted.”
“Joe is a coach who is constantly dedicated; he doesn’t switch off from thinking about how to improve us once he leaves the gym.”
“For me, personally, this unwavering commitment is what makes him one of the best coaches around; his devotion is evident in the time and effort he invests in his fighters.”
One might wonder how a flyweight prospect from Liverpool, with fewer than ten professional bouts, found himself displaying his talents in Las Vegas.
As is often the case in boxing, the opportunity arose from a social media post by Turki Alalshikh.
Impressed by Tallon`s abilities, the influential boxing figure posted on X, indicating his wish to see the young talent compete on the Canelo-Crawford fight week card.
Despite the immediate excitement, Tallon maintained a pragmatic view, believing nothing was certain until confirmed in writing.
“I was thrilled when he made the Tweet, but then I fought at the Olympia [in Liverpool] shortly after, and everyone was speculating about Vegas, though I knew no more than they did,” he confessed.
“From the moment Alalshikh posted that Tweet, it was just a matter of waiting patiently to see if it would genuinely materialize.”
“But when all the official announcements were made, and Joe showed me the contract, it was truly a breathtaking moment.”
While appreciative of the chance, Tallon soon realized his somewhat rushed preparation was far from ideal.
“As a child, you dream of fighting at venues like the MGM Grand, but you never really expect it to happen,” he stated. “So, to actually say I’ve fought there [in Vegas] feels incredible.”
“Before arriving, my focus was on delivering a strong performance to gain recognition, but once I was there, the entire experience was so fast-paced that my sole concern became securing the victory.”
Despite the lack of a full training camp against his opponent, Christian Robles, Tallon managed to deliver the impressive performance he had always envisioned.
Two knockdowns effectively stole the spotlight on September 10th. The first was a perfectly placed right hand over Robles’ guard, and the second, a swift uppercut, brought Tallon within inches of a spectacular finish in the sixth and final round.
“It was like muscle memory,” Tallon explained. “Joe recently posted two [social media] stories showing us practicing on the pads, followed by the two knockdowns.”
“It was precisely what we had been training – the exact same shots. Everything just aligned perfectly at the opportune moment.”
“After the fight, Joe immediately took me to meet Turki, who expressed his satisfaction with my performance and hopes to include me on future fight cards.”
This performance indeed highlighted not only Tallon’s power but also his precise striking ability, combining to create a well-rounded and effective style.
After experiencing the allure of fighting on a major international stage, the determined Scouser must now systematically build his career with a more measured approach.
For any fighter at this stage, consistent activity is paramount for Tallon, who anticipates a slightly less high-profile eight-round bout in December.
But at least for this next fight, he’ll only need to travel a short distance, avoiding another long-haul flight!
